Behind the name...

Have you ever come across a name you cannot pronounce? Or are you one of those (un)lucky people with a name that only a few people in this world can pronounce properly? I feel you on both instances. So what about ‘Lief’? How do you pronounce it and what does it mean? Oi! So many questions, so little time.

To put it simply, Lief means love. Lief is an Afrikaans word (pronounced leaf or leef). It can have a bunch of other connotations to love as well. It can mean loved one, lovable, loved, loves. Afrikaans people use it quite a lot to be honest. I guess we all use love a lot in some form or another.

So why use an Afrikaans word? Well, in case you haven’t guessed it yet, we are a South African mother and daughter duo, who live in Perth, Australia. Even though we absolutely love Perth and feel very blessed to live in such a stunning place, we will always have little bit of Africa in us.

Afrikaans is our home language and so, it just felt natural to have an Afrikaans name for our company.

And then on to our next explanation: What does love have to do with a cushion and homewares business? Our idea for the company came from a place of love. Love for sewing and being creative. Love for beautiful things. Love for other people and their welfare. And love for this beautiful Earth. We want to create a company where we can show this love and work IN love and hopefully share this love with others.

We are super excited to start this journey and grow more and more in love and share this love with you all. I know this sounds very cliché, but imagine a world with more love in it… can there ever be a place with too much of it?
